What Does Estate Planning Mean?
Black's Law Dictionary defines Estate Planning as the preparation for the distribution and management of a person's estate at death through the use of wills, trusts, insurance policies and other arrangements, especially to reduce administration costs and transfer-tax liability.
To the Maverick Law Group, we believe, in its simplest form, that it just means a smooth transition upon someone's passing and peace of mind for our client that their affairs are in order.
Our Process
We hold in-person consultations with our client or potential client where we look in depth at their assets and discuss and decide how best to ensure there is a smooth transition upon passing. We then hold a follow-up meeting to sign all the necessary documents, putting in place that smooth transition as well as giving peace of mind.
The Basic Three
We believe strongly that every person should have what we call the Basic Three:
- The Will - outlines how your assets and affairs should be handled after your passing
- A Durable Power of Attorney - designates someone to manage your financial and legal matters if you become unable to do so
- An Advanced Health Care Directive - ensures your medical wishes are known and honored
We will also discuss the need for a trust and whether that should be a trust to protect assets or a trust to assist in a smooth transition.
